The Century Magazine

Scribner’s Monthly ran from Nov 1870 until 1881 (22 volumes). The original Scribner’s was bought out by another person and changed to Century Company, so the magazine (while editorially generally unchanged) changed to The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The individual volumes had both “complete” (ie with Scribner’s) and “new series” (ie Century only) volume numbers; usually the bound volume spines show the “new series” number.

Scribner’s Monthly should not be confused with Scribner’s Magazine.

At some point (probably after 1900, I haven’t bothered to investigate it yet), the name of the magazine changed to The Century Monthly, without any change in volume/series numbers. In 1929, volume 118 is a short volume (4-months, May-Aug). Volume 119 is a 1-issue quarterly (autumn 1929), and volume 120 has 2 issues: winter 1929 and spring 1930; the name being The Century: A Popular Quarterly. And then it stopped, or at least, we don’t have any more volumes.

So our holdings (there may be more hiding in boxes and in the basement):
