India: What Can it Teach Us? A Course of Lectures delivered before the University of Cambridge, by F. Max Müller. New York: Funk & Wagnalls, ©1883.
The book contains seven lectures to students hoping to join the British Civil Service in India, exhorting them to examine their prejudices.
Notice, however that the title page continues:
Text and Foot-notes Complete
With an Introduction and Notes by
Prof. Alexander Wilder, M.D.
This information becomes important when you read some of the “Notes” by Wilder. First of all, he removed the original appendix, and interspersed “only the relevant” parts into the text as footnotes (avoiding all that technical Sanskrit stuff — who needs that?). He also has displayed his own prejudices with some of his commentary. How sad that he could not have read the text more attentively.
