The Young Man’s Guide, by William A. Alcott. Twelfth Edition. Boston: Perkins and Marvin, 1838, ©1835.
This apparently immensely popular book (12 editions in 3 years!) is full of advice to young men about business, education, society and marriage. There is also a long section on avoiding “the solitary vice.” Tsk. Somewhat religious in tone; full of admonishments to cultivate and exhibit good moral character.
William A. Alcott (1798-1859) was a prolific writer of advice books.
