Wits and Beaux of Society, Volume 1

The Wits and Beaux of Society, by Grace and Philip Wharton. New Edition with a Preface by Justin Huntly McCarthy, M.P. New York: Worthington Co. 1890. Volume 1 of 2.

This is the third edition of this gossipy (and occasionally catty) little book about Regency-era men.

Grace Wharton was really Mrs. A. T. (Katherine Byerly) Thompson (1797-1862). Philip Wharton is harder to find. Is he really the person who lived from 1834-1860 and wrote Bhagavad-gítá; or, A discourse between Krishna and Arjuna on divine matters, as the LoC seems to indicate? Or was he really Antony Todd (or maybe John C.) Thompson as another source on the web asserts?

Where’s a literary detective when you need one?

Project Gutenberg has the second (and final) volume of Wits and Beaux.
