Duality of Voice

Duality of Voice, An Outline of Original Research, by Emil Sutro, (1832-1906). New York, London, G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1899.
2 p.l., iii-vi p., 1 l., 224 p. 20 cm.

After 43 pages of introduction, where Mr Sutro explains that he isn’t a kook, he just doesn’t agree with mainstream ideas about voice, he describes the physiology of the voice and how it relates to nationality.

The motivation for his work is interesting: as a German he wished to speak English like a native (where, I don’t know) and idiomatically. His studies led him to his idea of how the voice is generated.

It is possible, but I haven’t any direct information, that our Emil Sutro was an investment banker in San Francisco (his company later became RBC Dain Rauscher), lived from 1832-1906, and was married to Kathinka Sutro-Schücking.
