The Heart of Unaga, by Ridgwell Cullum. New York, A. L. Burt Company, 1920.
v, 441 p. 20 cm.
Ridgwell Cullum is a pseudonym for Sidney Groves Burghard (1867 Aug 13-1943 Nov 3). The name “Ridgwell Cullum” appears in a cast list for The Balkan Princess, a light opera by Paul A. Rubens (1875-1917).
This book is a western adventure, kind of. It hits what was by the 1920’s all of the clichés about Indians (such as speaking with bad grammar even amongst themselves, and with many references to a “Great White Chief.”) It also mentions Eskimos. And Deadwood. So there’s obviously a lot of travelling going on. However, the highlight of the story is the myth about the “tribe who sleeps 6 months of the year.” A lost race!
