Newell Dwight Hillis was pastor at Plymouth Church, (an independent Congregationalist church) following Henry Ward Beecher and Lyman Abbot. Members of the church were part of the tour taken by Mark Twain recounted in The Innocents Abroad.

This book was written to inspire men to create Godliness in themselves and avoid sin.
